Merrie Monarch Festival

The annual "Super Bowl" of hula, The Merrie Monarch Festival takes place in Hilo each spring. The colorful festival attracts the finest hula troops to compete for coveted honors in a week-long extravaganza of performances and special events.

Punalau Black sand beach

Punalau Black sand beach is located in the south side of the island. Black sand, made of lava rocks, creates a beautiful natural cove, where many Honu (sea turtles) thrive and swim and at this beach.

Puu Mahana, Green Sand Beach, is located primarily on the slopes of Mauna Loa, the worlds largest and most massive active volcano on the southwestern part of the island in the KauÕ district. To get to this beach, one must either use a four-wheel drive or hike six miles from South Point, Ka Lae, the southern most tip of the United States (not an easy hike to this area, good foot ware and lots of drinking water is a necessity).

Kilauea Volcano

The Big IslandÕs main attraction is Hawaii Volcanoes National Park where Kilauea, the biggest active volcano in the world, has been erupting continuously since January 1983, pouring red lava into the ocean in a spectacular display of pyrotechnics.

Sacred WaterFalls

Impressive waterfalls dot the coastline. Most notably and easily accessible for visitors are Rainbow Falls above downtown Hilo, Akaka Falls just north of Hilo, and the 1,000 foot HiÕilawe Falls in spectacularly scenic Waipio Valley near Honokaa.

Rainbow Falls

A Beautiful water fall located northeastern part of Big Island. The natural fall creates a beautiful rainbow with its mist when the water fall hits the bottom.

Parker Ranch

Parker Ranch is located on 225,000 acres of natural Hawaiian land where 50,000 cattles and 1,000 horses are herded. Parker Ranch visitor center provides information on the Parker estates and King Kamehameha's family tree and photos exhibit.

Coffee Belt

World famous Kona coffee is grown in this region called coffee belt, known for its vast agricultural area where the delicious Kona coffee is born. Many shops and stores exist along this highway to enjoy the fresh taste of Kona coffee.

Chain of crater road

Visit the various sized of craters just east of the Kilauea, along the road. The molten river of lava may be seen here crashing into the hawaiian ocean. The red hot lava is viewable at dusk, flowing fiercely into the ocean vigorously.

King Kamehameha Statue

The famous statue of King Kamehameha stands in front of the old courthouse on the island of Oahu, but this statue located on Hilo is the original statue. The statue is filled with colorful leis every year celebrating Kamehameha day during the month of June.

Mauna Kea

Mauna Kea is the highest and chilliest peak in Hawaii, itÕs summit rises to 13, 796 feet. Hale Pohaku, at the 9,200-foot level, is the visitorÕs center for the many world-class observatories atop the summit and home to the Onizuka Center for International Astronomy, where the public is invited to participate in weekly star gazing sessions. It is even possible to go skiing when it snows.

Waipio Valley

Old Hawaiian tales say there exists an entrance to the land of golden streams located at black sand beach in Waipio Bay. Protected by 300 meters of coarse cliffs, it is told that Mana (spirit) lives among these valleys to protect the people. Waipio is a beautiful haven full of lush nature abundant with pure natural water.
